Waiting for Durian has launched a Durian Picnic Experience to reconnect with local durian culture.

A project by artists Kray Chen and Melinda Lauw, Waiting for Durian combines their love for art-making, experience design, and durian to create events, experiences, and objects that celebrate and reimagine durian culture.

The project is part of the online exhibition If Forests Talk, which is part of Singapore Art Week 2021, and looks at the tropical rainforest through the lens of artists.

To complement their durian picking audio story created for the exhibition, Waiting for Durian has launched an experiential durian picnic mat.

And Sunny City Kids got to experience it first hand!

Durian Lovers Picnic Mat

No more laying newspapers on the ground to eat durians!

With the Durian Lovers Picnic Mat, you can now enjoy your durians on a beautifully designed picnic mat while engaging in some durian edutainment at the same time.

Waiting for Durian
Lovin the mat!

The kids really loved exploring the graphics, content, and activities on the mat, picking up fun facts about durian such as how it got its name and which area has the most durian trees in Singapore.

There are also quizzes, activities, and prompts sprinkled in on each side of the mat to encourage sharing and interaction.

The 1.2m x 1.2m mat costs $49 and comes in two designs (design A or B), complete with durian edutainment and a 15 minutes immersive audio story.

With Design A, you get a sprawling spread of content with lovely hand-drawn sketches.

Our mat was design B, which is more for folks who want something fun, cute, and family friendly.

The illustration actually maps out to the audio story as well!

Durian Picnic Party Pack

With the Durian Picnic Party Pack, you can add durians to your picnic mat for your very own picnic party.

Waiting for Durian has partnered with 99 Old Trees to bring fresh Mao Shan Wang durians from Pahang straight to you.

The durians are selected from trees that are at least 15 years old as durians from old trees are richer and have a more intense taste.

The durians are delivered whole as part of the fun is actually cracking open the durian!

Don't know how to do this? No worries! The picnic mat includes instructions and tips on opening up whole durians and washing up with durian husks.

You'll find bite sized information on all sides of the picnic mat (Images: Waiting for Durian)

The durians we got were really fleshy with a rich intense smell and bitter sweet taste. Just heavenly.

Needless to say, they didn't last very long!
